Accessibility

Colorblind mode, reduced motion, and large chat text — plus name and chat color commands.

Imperium is built to be playable by everyone. The accessibility system gives every player three toggleable preferences — colorblind mode, reduced motion, and large chat text — that persist across logins and quietly adjust the game for you. On top of that, the color commands let you recolor your chat name and chat text so the conversation is easier to follow at a glance.

The Three Accessibility Toggles

Each toggle is a per-player preference stored in the database. They default to OFF until you opt in, and they persist across every login — set them once and forget. Other Imperium systems consult these flags before sending particles, animations, or color-only indicators your way.

SettingCommandWhat ON does
Colorblind Mode/accessibility colorblind <on|off>Color-only indicators (rarity tiers, status flags) gain text labels and icons so they are readable without color distinction.
Reduced Motion/accessibility reducedmotion <on|off>Particle effects, screen shake, and frequent animations are suppressed for you. The world stays calmer and more readable.
Large Chat Text/accessibility largechat <on|off>Chat text spacing is increased for easier reading.

All three toggles accept friendly values: on, true, yes, 1, or enable to turn ON; and off, false, no, 0, or disable to turn OFF.

Colorblind Mode

By default, many Imperium indicators are color-coded — rarity tiers, status flags, enabled/disabled states. For players with red-green or blue-yellow color vision deficiencies, those signals can blend together. Colorblind mode adds text labels and icons alongside the color so the information is readable without relying on hue alone.

The backend supports the four most common color vision deficiencies (deuteranopia, protanopia, tritanopia, and achromatopsia), so the toggle is a single on/off that the rendering systems respect. Turn it on if you have ever struggled to tell a Rare from an Epic, or a Mythic from a Legendary.

Reduced Motion

Imperium is full of motion — particle trails, kill effects, mine effects, screen shake on big events, and animated cosmetics. For players sensitive to motion, prone to motion sickness, or playing on a low-FPS machine, reduced motion suppresses particles and animations and reduces the frequency of motion-heavy effects for you specifically.

Other players still see the full spectacle — reduced motion is a personal preference, not a server-wide change. Your active pet follower still follows you; it just trims the particle noise around it.

Large Chat Text

Large chat text increases the spacing of chat lines so each message has more room to breathe. It is ideal for players on high-resolution displays where the default chat feels cramped, or anyone who finds chat hard to scan. Toggle it on and chat becomes immediately more legible.

Checking Your Settings

Run /accessibility or /accessibility status to see a panel showing every toggle and its current ON/OFF state. Use the same command with a setting name and value to flip a toggle. There is also /accessibility help for the full reference.

CommandWhat it does
/accessibilityOpen the status panel — shows every toggle and whether it is ON or OFF.
/accessibility statusAlias for the status panel.
/accessibility colorblind onEnable colorblind mode (color-only indicators get text labels + icons).
/accessibility reducedmotion onEnable reduced motion (suppress particles, screen shake, frequent animations).
/accessibility largechat onEnable large chat text (increased chat line spacing).
/accessibility helpShow the accessibility command reference.

Chat & Name Colors

Beyond the accessibility toggles, every player can recolor how their name and messages appear in chat. This is both a personalization feature and an accessibility one — a distinctive name color makes you instantly recognizable in a busy chat scroll.

CommandWhat it does
/namecolorOpen the name color menu — lists every solid color, donor gradient, and the reset option.
/namecolor <color>Set your chat name color. Solids: red, gold, aqua, light_purple, green, white. Donor gradients: donor_cycle, prestige_cycle.
/namecolor noneReset your name to the default color.
/chatcolorOpen the chat color menu — lists every solid color, donor gradient, and the reset option.
/chatcolor <color>Set your chat text color. Solids: red, gold, aqua, light_purple. Donor gradients: donor_cycle, prestige_cycle.
/chatcolor noneReset your chat text to the default color.

The six solid name colors available to everyone with the permission:

ColorNotes
redBold red — high contrast against dark backgrounds.
goldImperial gold — the signature color of Rome.
aquaBright cyan — easy to spot in busy chat.
light_purpleSoft magenta — distinctive and readable.
greenFriendly green — high visibility.
whiteClean white — neutral and crisp.

Donor ranks unlock gradient name and chat colors (donor_cycle, prestige_cycle) that shift hue across your name. Run /namecolor or /chatcolor with no arguments to see the full menu, including which gradients your rank unlocks.

Why These Settings Matter

Accessibility is not a separate game mode — it is the same game, adjusted so more people can play it comfortably. The colorblind, reduced-motion, and large-text toggles are quiet quality-of-life improvements that take a second to enable and make a real difference for the players who need them. The color commands let everyone personalize their chat presence regardless of ability.

Tips

  1. Try colorblind mode even if you don't think you need it. The text labels are genuinely useful in dense UIs like the gemma and pet menus.
  2. Reduced motion helps low-FPS players too. Fewer particles means less rendering work, which can smooth out a struggling client.
  3. Pick a high-contrast name color. Aqua, gold, and green are the most readable in a fast-moving chat. Avoid white if the chat background is bright.
  4. Settings persist across logins. Set them once on day one and they apply forever — no need to re-toggle every session.
  5. The settings are personal. Your reduced motion does not affect what other players see; your color choices apply only to your own chat rendering.
  6. Check /accessibility after a long break. New toggles may be added over time, and the status panel is the fastest way to see what's available.
