Toll-lord of the Alpine Fief. The last name on the ladder, first name in the ledger.

Clerk of the Horrea Galbana. Counts grain sacks like misers count regrets.

Picker of Mons Testaceus. The hill is broken amphorae; he knows every ship by its shards.

Vintner of the Caelian slopes. Trades wine for secrets he never drinks.

Stable-master of the Ludus stables. Smells of hay, horse, and quiet profit.

Quartermaster of the Castra Praetoria. Signs for everything, including you.

Milestone-Keeper

Keeper of the Appian milestones. Measures Rome one stone at a time.

Mausoleum Keeper

Keeper of the Mausoleum Augusti. Gardens, urns, and imperial quiet.

Doorkeeper of Porta Clausa. Guards a gate that never opens, for a Rome that never asks why.

Water-carrier of the Aqua Virgo fountains. Knows every roof and most of the gossip under them.

Goatherd of the Aventine slopes. The goats vote with their hooves.

Scribe of the Emporium quays. Declares cargo, under-declares everything else.

Alley-sweep of the Via Lata. Knows every door, dog, and debt on the street.

Baker of the Macellum Liviae. His ovens run on schedule, his humor on flour.

Shepherd of the Vatican slope. His flock outranks the hill augurs and knows it.

Dancer of the Ludus Dacius. She outruns gladiators for fun and rents stages for profit.

Potter of the Testaccio crown. Fires jars that will one day be somebody’s geology.

Ferryman of the Fabricius landing. Two coins, one crossing, zero questions.

Architect of the Pacis survey. Measures Rome and finds her a centimeter short.

Elegist at the Divine Julius. Writes for the dead because they never edit.

Beggar-woman of the Lacus Curtius. Holds the pit’s ledger by daylight.

Courier apprentice at Porta Tiburtina. Fastest of the eastern roads, twice fined.

The Forum’s lamplighter — arrives with the dark, leaves with the dawn (nights only).

The night-market fence of Pons Cestius. Prices peak at midnight (nights only).

The shade of the Lacus Curtius takes its midnight turn (deep night only).

Counts aloud at the Galbana. Notices everything, says the numbers and nothing else.

Bread line back there. You do not look like the bread line.

Confesses by arithmetic or not at all — until The Honest Man is settled.

Speaks in half-sentences and lines from plays nobody stages anymore.
