Arena Ranking (ELO)
Ranked 1v1 PvP with matchmaking — climb six tiers from Bronze to Master and earn tier-scaled Denarius.
The Arena Ranking (ELO) system is Imperium's ranked 1v1 PvP ladder. Queue up, get matched against an opponent within 200 rating points of you, fight, and climb six tiers from Bronze to Master. Win and you gain Arena Ranking plus a tier-scaled Denarius payout; lose and you drop rating. Everyone starts at 1000, and the top of the ladder is reserved for the server's true gladiators.
The Six Tiers
Arena Ranking is divided into six tiers, each with a Roman title that broadcasts when you promote. Every tier you climb increases the Denarius reward for a win — and the prestige. The ladder resets to 1000 at the start of each season, so everyone races from the same starting line.
| Tier | Rating range | Title | Win reward | Loss reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 0 – 799 | Plebeian Gladiator | $25,000 | $5,000 |
| Silver | 800 – 1,199 | Legionary Champion | $50,000 | $10,000 |
| Gold | 1,200 – 1,599 | Centurion's Elite | $100,000 | $20,000 |
| Platinum | 1,600 – 1,999 | Praetorian Guard | $200,000 | $30,000 |
| Diamond | 2,000 – 2,399 | Consul's Champion | $300,000 | $50,000 |
| Master | 2,400+ | Imperial Invictus | $500,000 | $100,000 |
Loss rewards are capped at $500 regardless of tier. This is by design: without the cap, two players could farm wins and losses back and forth to mint currency. Losing a ranked match pays a symbolic participation amount only — the real money is in winning.
Queueing & Matchmaking
Joining a ranked duel is as simple as /elo queue. The system immediately searches the queue for the closest-rated opponent within ±200 Arena Ranking of you. If a suitable opponent is already queued, you are matched instantly; if not, you stay in the queue (it times out after 60 seconds) and get matched as soon as someone eligible joins.
- Run
/elo queue— you see your current rating and tier. - The system searches for an opponent within ±200 rating.
- When matched, both players are teleported together and the duel begins.
- Whoever lands the killing blow wins; the result is reported automatically.
- Leave the queue any time with
/elo leave.
The match is decided wherever the fight happens — typically the PVP Mine or wherever the loser is teleported to the winner. There is no separate arena instance; ranked duels are integrated into the live world, so other players may see the broadcast and watch.
How Rating Changes
Imperium uses the standard ELO formula with a K-factor of 32. The key insight: beating a higher-rated opponent is worth more than beating a lower-rated one, and losing to a lower-rated opponent costs you more than losing to a higher-rated one.
- Expected score is computed from the rating gap: a 400-point favorite is expected to win roughly 10 times as often as lose.
- Win: you gain roughly 0–32 points, more if you were the underdog.
- Loss: you lose roughly 0–32 points, more if you were the favorite.
Because of this, a Diamond player beating a Bronze player gains almost nothing, while a Bronze player beating a Diamond player jumps dramatically. This keeps the ladder self-correcting: your rating converges on your true skill level over time.
Your peak rating is tracked permanently in the database alongside your current rating, wins, and losses. Even after a seasonal reset to 1000, your career-best remains as a personal record.
Win & Loss Rewards
Every ranked duel pays out Denarius based on the tier you are in after the result. Win a duel that promotes you from Gold to Platinum and you pocket the Platinum win reward ($200,000). The tier promotion itself is also broadcast to the whole server with your new title — "Praetorian Guard" or otherwise — and a challenge-complete fanfare.
On a loss, you drop rating and receive only the capped participation amount. The winner hears a victory chime; the loser hears an item-break sound. There is no partial credit for close fights — ELO is binary on the outcome.
Seasons & the Ladder
ELO is seasonal. At the start of each season (monthly), ratings reset to the 1000 baseline, giving everyone a fresh climb. Your peak rating and historical wins/losses persist, but the live ladder resets — so the race to Diamond and Master restarts every month. The top 10 players at season end earn exclusive rewards.
Track the live ladder any time with /elo top, which lists the top 10 players by current Arena Ranking along with their tier. Because ratings live in memory while you are online, the leaderboard reflects the current online population — climb high enough and you will see your own name on it.

Tips
- Climb early in the season. Right after the monthly reset, everyone is near 1000, so the queue is full and matches are fast.
- Win to earn, don't farm losses. Loss rewards are capped at $500 to prevent farming — only winning pays meaningfully.
- Upset wins are huge. Beating a much higher-rated opponent can gain you near the full 32 points; seek tough matches when you are confident.
- Queue with gear ready. The duel begins the moment you are matched — have your PvP kit, food, and potions equipped before you queue.
- Watch the /elo top. Knowing who is rated above you tells you who to practice against and who to avoid until you climb.
- Promotion broadcasts are bragging rights. Hitting Diamond or Master announces your title to the whole server — time your climb for when your rivals are offline.
- Peak rating is forever. Even after a reset, your career-high stays on record, so push for a personal best each season.
