Pickaxe Skins
Seven functional pickaxe skins that grant real mining bonuses — token surges, multipliers, Haste, and instant breaks.
Pickaxe skins in Imperium come in two completely different flavors. The Cosmetics guide covers the thousands of visual texture skins from the optional resource pack. This guide covers the seven functional skins — each one is a permanent, equippable perk that grants a real gameplay bonus while you mine. They are not cosmetic: a skin can add tokens, multiply your money, give Haste, or break extra blocks. Choosing the right skin is one of the biggest income decisions you will make.
The Seven Functional Skins
All seven skins are unlocked per-player and persisted to the database. Once unlocked, you can equip and unequip them freely. Only one skin can be active at a time, and its effect fires on every block break in a mine world (mine_*).
| Skin | Category | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Token Surge | tokens | Passive +50% Auctoritas income on every block mined. |
| Storm Surge | lightning | Haste III while mining + 5% chance to instantly break the block ahead. |
| Multiplier | multipliers | Block sell value multiplied by ×1.5. |
| Ultimate | ultimate | Combines: +25% Denarius, +25% Auctoritas, +5% Civitas, 3% instant break. |
| Utility | utility | Auto-smelts all mineable ores and sorts your inventory every 60 blocks. |
| Energy | energy | 10% chance to break an adjacent extra block on every mine swing. |
| Progress | midgame | +0.5% Auctoritas bonus per rank level (rank 100 = +50% extra Auctoritas). |
Skin Effects in Detail
Token Surge
Passive +50% Auctoritas income on every block mined. Adds +1.5 Auctoritas to every block break, straight into your balance via the economy batcher. The pure token-farming skin.
Best for: Players grinding Auctoritas for Sarcina, armor, or skill-tree upgrades.
Storm Surge
Haste III while mining + 5% chance to instantly break the block ahead. Applies Haste III (3-second pulses) continuously, and on a 5% roll, mines the block in front of you for free and stores it in your Sarcina.
Best for: AFK and active miners who want faster block throughput.
Multiplier
Block sell value multiplied by ×1.5. On every block break, adds 50% of the block's value as bonus Denarius. Effectively a permanent 1.5× money multiplier on mining income.
Best for: The default income-max skin — best raw Denarius per block.
Ultimate
Combines: +25% Denarius, +25% Auctoritas, +5% Civitas, 3% instant break. The all-rounder. Splits the bonus across all three mineable currencies and adds a 3% chance to instantly break an adjacent block. Less of any one thing, but good at everything.
Best for: Endgame players who want balanced income across currencies.
Utility
Auto-smelts all mineable ores and sorts your inventory every 60 blocks. A quality-of-life skin. Every 60th block break triggers an action-bar confirmation. The smelting and sorting reduce inventory management overhead during long sessions.
Best for: Miners who hate inventory tetris and want ores auto-processed.
Energy
10% chance to break an adjacent extra block on every mine swing. On each block break, a 10% roll mines one of the four horizontally-adjacent blocks (N/S/E/W) for free and stores it. Effectively +10% block throughput on average.
Best for: Dense-vein miners — the adjacent-block break shines in tight ore clusters.
Progress
+0.5% Auctoritas bonus per rank level (rank 100 = +50% extra Auctoritas). Scales with your rank — the higher you climb the cursus honorum, the bigger the token bonus. At rank 100, it rivals Token Surge. Below rank 20, it is weak.
Best for: High-rank players (rank 40+) who want a skin that grows with them.
How Effects Actually Fire
Every functional skin triggers off the block-break event in mine worlds only. The bonus is applied through the economy batcher (for currency bonuses) or by directly mining the adjacent block (for break-on-hit effects). A few mechanics worth knowing:
- Currency bonuses are batched. Denarius, Auctoritas, and Civitas from skins are queued and deposited together, so you may see them in your mining summary rather than as instant chat spam.
- Adjacent-block breaks respect the Sarcina. When a skin mines an extra block, that block is offered to your Sarcina first. If the Sarcina is full, the block is dropped into the world instead of destroyed — so you never lose the bonus.
- Haste III pulses. Storm Surge reapplies Haste every break (3-second duration), so the effect stays up continuously while you mine.
- Effects only trigger in mines. The skin checks that the block is in a
mine_*world, so breaking blocks elsewhere does nothing.
Functional skins and visual texture skins are separate systems. A functional skin changes the bonus; a texture skin changes only the look. You can have a functional skin active and a texture skin applied at the same time.
Equipping and Unequipping
A skin is unlocked the moment it is granted to you — and if you have no active skin at that time, the new skin auto-equips. Once unlocked, you can switch active skins freely. When you equip a skin, your prison pickaxe is re-issued to reflect the change.
To equip or switch:
- Open the
/pickaxemenu and look for the skins section. - Use the cosmetics menu if it exposes functional skins.
- Skins you have not unlocked appear locked and cannot be equipped.
Your active skin and the full set of skins you have unlocked are both persisted, so they survive logouts, restarts, and even profile reloads.
Getting Functional Skins
Unlike visual texture skins (which come from the resource pack), functional skins are granted through gameplay and progression. Common sources:
- Crates — high-tier crates can grant functional skins directly.
- Battle Pass — premium track tiers include skin rewards.
- Seasonal events and festivals — limited-time skin drops.
- The store — some functional skins are available as premium purchases.
- Achievements and milestones — certain long-term goals unlock skins.
Choosing Your Skin
The right skin depends on what you are optimizing for. Because only one can be active, you are making a real tradeoff:
| If you want… | Pick this skin |
|---|---|
| Max raw Denarius | Multiplier — flat ×1.5 sell value is hard to beat. |
| Max Auctoritas tokens | Token Surge early; Progress once you are rank 40+. |
| Faster block throughput | Storm Surge (Haste + instant break) or Energy (adjacent breaks). |
| Balanced everything | Ultimate — splits the bonus across all three currencies. |
| Less inventory management | Utility — auto-smelt and sort. |
| A skin that scales with rank | Progress — grows from +0.5% per rank to +50% at rank 100. |
Stacking With Other Bonuses
Functional skin bonuses stack with almost every other multiplier in the game — they are applied as separate additions on each block break, on top of your rank, prestige, enchant, pet, and booster multipliers. This is why a good skin can be worth tens of millions of Denarius over a long mining session.
The one exception: skin currency bonuses are additive per block, not multiplicative with the Sarcina sell multiplier. So a Token Surge +1.5 Auctoritas per block is a flat addition, while the Sarcina multiplier scales the sell value of the blocks themselves. Both apply; they just apply at different points in the calculation.
