Currencies

The complete guide to Denarius, Auctoritas, Civitas, and Aureus — how to earn each, what they buy, and every balance command.

Imperium runs on four currencies, each with its own symbol, sources, and uses. Knowing which one a purchase costs — and where to grind for it — is the difference between a citizen who stalls at Rank X and one who climbs to Summus Deus. This guide is the complete reference: what each currency is, how to earn it, what it buys, and every command you need to check your wallet and the leaderboards.

The Four Currencies at a Glance

Each currency is stored separately in the database under its own column (money, tokens, beacons, gc) and formatted with its own symbol and decimal precision. Denarius and Aureus carry two decimal places; Auctoritas and Civitas are whole numbers.

CurrencySymbolWhat it isDecimals
Denarius$The everyday money of the empire. Earned from mining and spent on almost everything.2
Auctoritas"Authority" tokens. The prestige currency for permanent upgrades.0
Civitas"Citizenship" beacons. The guild and extraction currency.0
Aureus🪙Premium gold coin. The rarest currency, mostly from voting and milestones.2

The symbols above are the in-game glyphs: $ for Denarius, for Auctoritas, for Civitas, and 🪙 for Aureus. You will see them on every reward line, shop price, and leaderboard entry.

Denarius — The Money

Denarius ($, gold) is the main currency of the empire. It is what you mine for, what you rank up with, and what circulates through the entire economy. Almost every transaction — from the rank-up counter to the casino wager to the auction-house listing — is priced in Denarius.

How to earn

  • Mining: break blocks, fill your Sarcina, and sell with /sellall. This is the primary source.
  • Enchants: picks like Denarius Boost and Jackpot add Denarius per block.
  • Selling: the Auction House, trading, and contraband runs.
  • Free income: voting, daily/weekly/monthly rewards, drop parties, envoys, challenges, and the battle pass.

What it buys

Ranks (the entire cursus honorum), pickaxe upgrades, enchant-book fusing fees, casino wagers (/coinflip, /crash, /roulette), contraband goods, and auction-house purchases. It is also the currency transferred with /pay and stored in /bank.

Denarius is the only currency subject to the wealth tax — a small percentage of large sells feeds the seasonal tax vault, which pays out during festivals. See the Economy guide for the full tax breakdown.

Auctoritas — The Tokens

Auctoritas (, yellow) is the authority currency — the long-game token you sink into permanent upgrades. Where Denarius is spent and gone, Auctoritas is usually invested in something that keeps paying you back.

How to earn

  • Drops while mining (boosted by enchants, pets, and the Token Surge skin).
  • Challenge completions and battle pass tiers.
  • Voting milestones and crate rewards.
  • The mentor +5% and marriage fortune bonuses.

What it buys

Sarcina upgrades (capacity, autosell, multiplier), armor sets and their tier upgrades, gemmae, skill-tree nodes, profession recipes, and legion upgrades. Most progression systems that scale forever are priced in Auctoritas precisely because it cannot be bought with Denarius.

Civitas — The Beacons

Civitas (, aqua) is the citizenship currency — earned through collective and competitive play, and spent on the things that bind the empire together: legions and enchant extraction.

How to earn

  • Mining in a legion-controlled mine (Civitas drops per block).
  • Capturing and holding outposts.
  • The Colosseum and envoy airdrops.
  • High-tier challenge and battle pass rewards.

What it buys

Legion creation and all legion upgrades, enchant extraction from your pickaxe (the cost scales with the enchant level), and the challenge shop.

Aureus — The Premium Coin

Aureus (🪙, purple-gold) is the rare premium currency. It is the only currency you can also obtain from the store, but it is generously handed out for free through voting and milestones — most active players never need to buy it.

How to earn (free)

  • Voting every day — the single best free source.
  • Vote Top monthly leaderboard prizes.
  • Monthly reward claims and prestige milestones.
  • Referrals when a referred friend hits Rank V.
  • Vote parties and high-tier challenges / battle pass.

What it buys

/rankskip (skip a rank for Aureus instead of grinding Denarius), premium cosmetics, lucky blocks, the vote shop, and the capstone challenge rewards. Aureus purchases tend to be permanent or high-impact, so spend it on things that compound — ranks and cosmetics you will keep forever.

Conversion and Caps

The four currencies do not convert into each other directly — there is no exchange. You earn each through its own activities and spend each on its own things. This is deliberate: it keeps each loop meaningful (you cannot buy your way past a token grind with cash, and you cannot mine your way to premium cosmetics with Denarius alone).

Indirect conversion exists through the systems that pay in one currency and cost in another: for example, the contraband market lets you flip Denarius for profit, and the challenge shop lets you spend tokens/beacons/Aureus earned from challenges on items. But there is no /convert command.

Balances are not capped — you can hold as much of any currency as you can earn. Denarius is stored to two decimal places (minor units in the database), while the other three are whole numbers.

Checking Your Balance

Type /balance (aliases /bal, /money) for a clean summary of all four currencies at once. The output is color-coded to match each currency:

CurrencyStored columnSymbolColorDecimals
Denariusmoney$Gold2
AuctoritastokensYellow0
CivitasbeaconsAqua0
Aureusgc🪙Light purple2

With the imperiummc.balance.others permission you can also run /balance <player> to inspect someone else's wallet — useful for staff and trade verification.

Leaderboards

Every currency has its own top-10 leaderboard. Each query runs against the live database and shows the top accounts with medal-colored ranks (gold, silver, bronze for the podium). Hover any entry to see the raw stored balance.

CommandAliasesWhat it shows
/baltop/balancetop, /baltop10Top 10 players by Denarius wealth.
/denariustop/denarius topLeaderboard for Denarius only.
/auctoritastop/auctoritas topLeaderboard for Auctoritas tokens.
/civitastop/civitas topLeaderboard for Civitas beacons.
/aureustop/aureus topLeaderboard for Aureus premium coins.
/legiontopTop 10 legions ranked by XP.

/baltop is the prestige leaderboard — total Denarius wealth. But the per- currency tops can be more useful: /aureustop reveals who has the most premium spending power, and /civitastop hints at which legions are hoarding for upgrades.

Paying Other Players

Use /pay <player> <amount> to transfer Denarius directly to another player. This is the backbone of trust-based trades, tips, and splitting mining party loot. For larger or item-involving trades, use the secure /trade window instead — see the Economy guide for the full /pay and /bank reference, including banknotes (/withdraw / /redeem).

Spending Strategy

A few rules of thumb for managing four currencies at once:

  1. Spend Denarius on ranks first. Rank multipliers compound on every future block you mine — it is the highest-ROI Denarius sink in the game.
  2. Bank Auctoritas for the Sarcina. Capacity and autosell upgrades pay for themselves by letting you mine longer without stopping to sell.
  3. Do not extract enchants casually. Civitas extraction costs scale quadratically with level — save Civitas for legion upgrades unless you are reshaping your pickaxe build.
  4. Hoarde Aureus for /rankskip. Skipping a tedious mid-game rank with Aureus is often worth more than any cosmetic.
  5. Vote every day. It is free Aureus, free keys, free tokens — the single best currency-per-minute activity in the empire.
